What is a rescue jump starter?

A rescue jump starter is a portable, lightweight self-contained battery power source designed to jump start engines with dead or weak batteries in emergency situations.

Rescue jump starters come with a significant and important benefit. You won't ever need help from another person or vehicle to jump start your engine. You use it solo, no other external help is needed. When your engine starts, you remove the rescue jump starter from the battery terminals and the battery starts charging using the engines alternator.

Think of it as a powerful battery pack with in-built heavy-duty insulated cable clamps. They don't require another car or truck as a power source to function like older cumbersome jump leads.

Rescue jump starters are suitable for motorcycles, vehicles, 4x4, RV, machinery, ATV's, buses, jet skis, boats, vans or trucks.

Don't get left stranded by the roadside or water by not having a Lokithor rescue jump starter onboard for your next adventure big or small.

Discover the full range of Lokithor rescue jump starters using our JUMP STARTER FINDER page. Always demand and ensure Lokithor is onboard. There's a Lokithor rescue jump starter to suite every vehicle, campsite, engine, boat or passion in Australia.

What is the difference between a jump starter and jumper leads?

Choosing a Lokithor rescue jump starter means there is no need to find a second vehicle as a power source unlike old jump leads. Almost anyone, even without technical or mechanical knowledge can use a Lokithor rescue jump starter as a stand-alone handheld device.

Old style jump leads are long and bulky making them difficult to store on-board in smaller vehicles, boats or jet skis. Imagine the difficulty trying to jump start using two boats on water or when vehicles are difficult to position. In extreme cases, finding another vehicle for donor power is a luxury when off-road in remote locations.

Unlike old jump leads where vehicles need to be positioned exactly right, bumper to bumper or side by side, Lokithor rescue jump starters just need you.

Everyone could share a story about the difficulties trying to find a suitable second car or battery source. Additional challenges also include positioning vehicles in close proximity across difficult uneven terrain.

Lokithor rescue jump starters are portable, multifunction emergency devices with powerful in-built battery power. This independence allows you to jump start engines solo, anywhere, anytime.

In extreme dead or weak battery situations, forced start mode requires additional steps to get your engine started. Read your user manual for more information and safety precautions.

What does the "Jump Mode" & "Forced Start Mode" function mean?

In most engine starting failures, the engines battery simply isn't capable of providing high enough cranking amps to start the engine. The battery could be weak, dead or faulty with unknown health, that's why Lokithor comes with two jump starting modes.

NORMAL JUMP MODE

Weak batteries most likely require a standard Lokithor rescue jump start procedure. Lokithor rescue jump starters in normal rescue jump mode provides the additional cranking amps and battery power to start the engine. This allows you to get to safety for further battery diagnosis and health checks.

FORCED START JUMP MODE

Deeply discharged, faulty or dead batteries requires forced start. A forced start mode jump start is so powerful, it momentarily replaces the engines battery before the engine starts. Forced start mode provides a surge of power and must only be used as a last resort. Forced start mode must be used with caution due to electrical safety mechanisms being disabled.

How can I jump start my engine if I can't find the battery?

Many modern cars, vans, SUV's and 4x4's come with batteries fitted in unique places to save space, design choices or for safety reasons.

Some vehicles have engines at the back with the battery under the front bonnet. Some vehicles have engines at the front with the battery in the boot.

You must read your vehicles owners manual to understand the exact type of electrical system you have (12v, 24v or 48v) and where and if the jump starter points are fitted. Its best to become familiar with your vehicles electrical and recovery points before an emergency situation occurs. Owners manuals for land and water craft include this information.

Using your owners manual, read the instructions carefully on where to locate your jump start point inside your engine bay. Alternatively, a quick engine bay inspection may allow you to locate a red coloured door or flap with electrical clamp symbols printed.

Unlock, then lift this red plastic flap, connect the red lead (Positive clamp) to the metallic post under the red door. Now connect the black lead (Negative clamp) to a clean metallic location on the engine bay or body. You are now ready to jump start your engine getting to safety for further battery diagnostics.

How powerful is the LED torch inside my jump starter?

All Lokithor rescue jump starters come fitted with LED torches as standard. A single button press turns on the LED torch allowing you to light up emergency situations with ease.

The in-built LED torch is extremely versatile and a critical safety device when travelling. Useful for roadside breakdown checks, replacing tyres in the dark, campsite lighting, trail walk light or SOS beacon mode to alert rescuers of your location. A few Lokithor models even flash red and have various levels of brightness to save battery power or to suite the ambient environment.

Depending on the Lokithor model chosen, the LED lumen power varies including the different modes of operation (On, Flash & SOS). Check the full LED torch features via the links below;

What are the signs of a failing engine battery?

Many engine batteries are rated for a lifespan of 5 - 10 years depending on the brand of battery but many factors can influence the real lifespan. You never know when a battery will fail, even if your vehicle, 4x4, motorbike, van, boat or truck engine is new.

Signs your motorcycle, vehicle, boat or truck battery is low in power or gradually failing is slow engine cranking or dimming headlights when starting. Warning lights on the dashboard and check engine lights displaying low battery voltage may also be present depending on the make and model of your vehicle or water craft.

Regular battery checks prior to colder seasons is recommended, batteries are particularly vulnerable to failure in colder weather. Battery diagnostic experts will test your battery and report its overall performance, making recommendations for charging or replacement.

Professional quality battery chargers like the OzCharge Australian series, include rejuvenation and maintenance cycles as part of their smart charging algorithm. This can help prolong the life of batteries.

What if the jump starter doesn't start my engine?

There are several things you can check to diagnose why your engine is not starting when using Lokithor rescue jump starters.

Ensure the jump starter is fully charged and jumper leads securely connected to the jump start pack. Check connections to the battery ensuring positive and negative leads are connected correctly.

Read your owners manual to ensure you are connecting the positive jump starter lead to the correct jump start point or battery terminal.

Does the engine sound like it is cranking over ready to start? If not, other electrical issues may be present. If you can hear the engine attempting to turn over but not starting, that too can be a sign of other issues not particularly related to the battery such as fuel supply issues.

Clean the battery terminals if required and if it still doesn't start, there may be a more serious issue requiring professional mechanical or electrical diagnosis.

Can you jump start a completely dead battery?

Yes, you can jump start completely dead, deeply discharged or engines even if no battery is fitted using a special jump start mode built into Lokithor rescue jump starters called forced start.

Forced start is a special last resort jump start mode that's so powerful, it momentarily replaces the engines entire battery system before the engine starts. It can be compared to completely replacing your vehicles battery with a brand new one for a few seconds.

After this initial surge of power is used to start your engine, the engine and vehicle remain active only if the alternator which is used to charge and supply ongoing power to the battery is working. If the alternator and battery are both faulty, you are stranded with Lokithor rescue jump starters unable to assist in this unique situation.

Forced start mode disables all jump starter safety systems and must only be used to start and get to safety for further battery health checks or complete battery replacement.

Does a jump starter need to be fully charged to work?

No, it does not need to be fully charged to work. Even if not fully charged, jump starters can still deliver enough power to start engines however the number of successful starts you can achieve decreases as the charge level drops.

If your Lokithor rescue jump starter is not fully charged, its ability to start multiple vehicles or handle larger engines decreases. For example, a Lokithor rescue jump starter with a 50% charge can often still start engines, but it may struggle with larger vehicles or colder conditions.

Its also important to consider the type and quality of your jump starter. Professional quality jump starters like the Lokithor series are more likely to have higher performance even when not fully charged. Lokithor rescue jump starters devices are built to retain their charge longer and provide consistent power output.

Keeping your jump starter fully charged is a safety habit. Regularly checking and charging your jump starter ensures it is ready for use in emergencies, reducing the risk of being stranded with a dead battery especially in critical roadside or water situations.
